As spring begins to bloom, Ontario proudly celebrates the Jewish-Canadian community’s many achievements, recognizing their tremendous contributions to our province and country.
Three years ago, all provincial parties worked together to pass a bill declaring May as Jewish Heritage Month in Ontario. The bill was co-sponsored by my former colleague Ontario PC MPP Peter Shurman.
Jewish Heritage Month is so important because it allows Ontarians to learn about Jewish heritage and culture, and gives a voice to the forgotten Jews in other parts of the world such as, Yemen, Ethiopia, and China.
In Ontario, we have one of the fastest growing Jewish communities in the world, full of accomplished individuals who have made a significant impact on our province. Whether they made Ontario their home in the late 19th century, after World War II, or in more recent years, the Jewish community has always had an unshakeable determination to create a brighter future for their families and the communities they live in.
This determination shows as many of our province’s leaders in business, politics, the arts, journalism, academia and more are also leaders in our Jewish-Canadian community. They’ve helped to build our towns and cities, grow the economy and shape our culture – hosting events and welcoming all of Ontario to join in the festivities.
This month we’ll see many activities in our local communities recognizing these achievements, bringing together thousands of people from diverse backgrounds. I encourage the people of Ontario to take part in these events and to learn more about one of our province’s most vibrant communities.
I wish everyone celebrating, a most enjoyable Jewish Heritage Month!
