In the 1970s, the Government of Ontario reduced speed limits in response to an energy crisis. Slower speeds meant better fuel economy. That made sense 50 years ago.
Things have changed. Cars are more fuel efficient and they’re safer than ever. Our highways are designed for faster speeds.
The Government of Ontario is exploring the possibility of increasing the speed limits on some highways to align with speed limits in our neighbouring provinces. Our PC Government also recognizes the importance of updating traffic laws for to align with the reality of how people already drive.
