Statement from Patrick Brown on Remembrance Day
Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown today issued the following statement to mark Remembrance Day:
“Ninety-eight years ago today, at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, the armistice marking the end of First World War was signed. Hundreds of thousands of brave Canadians answered our nation’s call to armed service in that Great War, with many hailing from our own province. Tens of thousands would not return.
“Throughout Canada’s history, our courageous sailors, soldiers and aviators have fought in the seas, lands and in the air, both near and far, to protect our country. From Dieppe, Britain, Normandy, Korea, to Afghanistan, Libya and Iraq, the men and women of our military have defended the values of freedom and democracy.
“We honour their bravery, commemorate their service, and memorialize their sacrifice.
“Today, as citizens across our great province and country reflect on the high cost of freedom, I encourage all of us to find a way to give thanks. As Legions across Ontario faithfully attest, day after day, and year after year, we are home to a long and storied tradition of courage, bravery and fighting skill.
“I wish to express my deepest gratitude for those who have paid freedom’s price on all of our behalf, and to all those who continue that proud tradition of service in the Canadian Armed Forces today.
“I am proud that the Ontario Legislature unanimously passed MPP Jim Wilson’s bill designating the seven days prior to November 11th as “Remembrance Week”. It is a fitting tribute to our veterans and reflects the numerous services that take place leading up to Remembrance Day.
“Freedom is not free. Let us all remember, with gratitude, pride, and humility, those who paid the ultimate price for our sake.
“Lest we forget.”
