Ontario PCs Pledge to Review Public Sector Executive Compensation Packages

TORONTO – Today, the Ontario PCs announced their plans to launch a review into how decisions surrounding public sector executive compensation are made if they form government in 2018. ‎

“Last year we learned Hydro One CEO is being paid $4 million a year, and now it’s OPG and Metrolinx executives receiving massive pay hikes. This is just the tip of the iceberg,” said MPP Michael Harris, the Ontario PC Caucus’ Transportation Critic. “How many more new compensation packages are taxpayers going to be on the hook for?”

The new compensation packages could see the CEO at Metrolinx receive $118,000 a year pay increase – this announcement comes just weeks after Metrolinx was criticized in the Auditor General’s 2016 report for building a bridge upside down. Meanwhile the CEO at OPG could be receiving a salary of $2.3 million per year, an increase of 153 per cent.

“How out of touch can Kathleen Wynne and this Liberal Government become? The Wynne Liberals are slashing services, wasting millions of dollars, and driving families into energy poverty with the fastest increasing electricity prices in North America,” added Harris.

“Just when we didn’t think it could get any worse, we learn the Liberals’ priority is lining the pockets of these CEOs.  At the end of the day hardworking taxpayers are going to have a serious problem with these increases”

The review will include an extensive and transparent public consultation and occur prior to an annual review of executive compensation.
