Too Little, Too Late on Math

Whitby-Oshawa MPP Lorne Coe, Associate Critic for Education, said today that the Government’s proposed actions to review the education curriculum are too little, too late.

“The Liberal Government has continually been failing our students and teachers by getting education wrong”, stated MPP Coe.

“The proposed measures announced today are the Liberal Government’s failed effort to fix the problems that they created themselves in the curriculum, and ignored for 14 years. This is yet another example of scandal, waste, and mismanagement under the Liberal Government,” said MPP Coe.

“The recent EQAO province-wide results show that math scores have continued to decline under this Liberal Government, and this is absolutely unacceptable.”

The EQAO results confirm that there has been a five per cent decrease in the number of grade 3 students, and a seven per cent decrease in the number of grade 6 students who met the provincial standard in math compared to 2013. Only 50 per cent of Grade 6 students met the provincial standard in math for the second straight year.

“Proficiency in math is crucial to ensuring that students are prepared for future success. The Ontario PCs value a strong education system, and we will work hard to ensure that students across the province receive a high-quality, balanced education including math.”
