Back-to-Work Legislation Only Short-term Solution

QUEEN’S PARK – The passage today of Bill 103, Protecting the School Year, marks the short-term solution to a problem that the Liberal Government created.  “We are pleased that students are back in their classes – but that happened because of the decision of the OLRB rather than any positive action taken by this government,” said Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown.  “By not working with teachers and their representatives before any job action took place, this government created the chaos that students and their parents have been living through for the past few weeks.  This isn’t leadership – it’s an abdication of their responsibilities to the people of Ontario.”

“We supported this bill because at the time it was the best way to get students back into the classroom to learn,” stated Garfield Dunlop, Ontario PC Education Critic.  “The school year was being jeopardized and important school experiences, such as concerts, athletic competitions and proms were being affected.  Now, the government needs to begin taking the situation with all teachers seriously, return to the negotiating table and ensure that the province is not back in this position again in the Fall.”
